What is photobiomodulation and how does it work?
While “photobiomodulation” may sound complicated, it’s actually quite easy! In fact, you’ve probably experienced its benefits in one way or another already, since for many years light has been a common method of treating a variety of conditions, including psoriasis, vitiligo, and neo-natal jaundice. We bet you’re also familiar with the way our bodies use light for Vitamin D synthesis.
Photobiomodulation (PBM), also known as red light therapy or low-level light therapy, is simply another method for using light to promote health and healing. PBM uses specific wavelengths of red and near infrared light to penetrate the skin and create a biochemical effect within the cells that increases mitochondrial function. This improves the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate)—the source of energy for every cell in the body. As the production of ATP within the cell increases, the cell is better able to repair itself and function more optimally. Scale this process across an area of the body or the body in its entirety, and it results in a noticeable reduction of pain and a feeling of increased energy and rejuvenation.
Is it safe?
Yes. Our light therapy treatments use low-level lasers and LEDs that have no potentially harmful effects on the skin or clothing. The field of photobiomodulation has also been extensively researched for decades, with over 400 clinical trials conducted, 4,000+ lab studies performed and over 30 new research papers published each month on the safety and effectiveness of photobiomodulation.
Are your treatments “one size fits all”?
No, and that’s one of the biggest ways REDjuvenate is different from other PBM centers. Each of our clients receives a treatment plan customized to their specific needs and situation, based on established treatment protocols and results from clinical trials. Each treatment plan includes a prescription for the dosage of light a client will receive during their treatments, as well as the length and duration of sessions. Our treatment technicians are personally trained by THOR and follow an individualized protocol to achieve the best results for each client’s unique needs and/or condition.
Will there be any adverse effects on my skin?
No, but you may notice some positive ones! Because our light therapy treatments use red, infrared, and/or LED lights—and not UV rays—your body will absorb light at the desired wavelength for healing and rejuvenation, without burning, drying, or putting the skin at risk. In fact, red light has been reported to improve the skin, including repairing sun damage, evening out skin tone, reducing the visibility of wrinkles and fine lines, and healing acne blemishes.
This looks like a tanning bed—how does the NovoTHOR bed differ?
Our NovoTHOR whole-body light therapy bed uses red, infrared, and LED light only—no UV radiation. It is even safe enough to use without eye protection.
Is it sanitary?
Absolutely! We clean all of our equipment with rubbing alcohol wipes before and after each treatment, and our technicians wear non-latex gloves while treatments are taking place.
Can I wear clothes during treatments?
In order for the light to have the greatest impact, it needs to penetrate the skin directly.
When using the NovoTHOR whole-body, light therapy bed, it is recommended that you remove your clothes, although undergarments may be left on if preferred.
When having a handheld low-level laser treatment, it is only necessary to remove clothing on the area being treated. We conduct each session with your privacy and comfort in mind.
How long does a treatment session take?
The length of your treatment session(s) will depend on your individual issues, needs, and treatment plan. There are different treatment protocols based on the condition and area being treated. Most treatments range from 15 minutes to one hour. Contact us for more information on your specific situation.
